Climate action begins with understanding the environmental impact of our daily activities. Recognizing the important role of solid waste management in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Earth’s Climate for Sustainable Development Foundation is continuing to implement the Carbon Footprint Measurement and Reduction Project for Solid Waste in Kafr El Sheikh City, contributing to more sustainable waste management practices and stronger local capacities.
As part of the project’s capacity-building efforts, 50 participants successfully completed a specialized training on Climate Change and Carbon Footprint Measurement. The training introduced participants to internationally recognized methodologies for measuring greenhouse gas emissions associated with solid waste management and provided practical tools for collecting and analyzing environmental data.
Throughout the training, participants explored the relationship between climate change and waste management, carbon footprint accounting principles, emissions calculation methodologies, and opportunities to reduce emissions through more sustainable practices. Interactive exercises enabled participants to apply these concepts to real-life scenarios, strengthening their ability to support evidence-based environmental planning.
To further ensure the sustainability of knowledge transfer, the project also organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme for 16 participants. The programme equipped local trainers with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver future training sessions and expand the project’s impact within their organizations and communities.
Beyond technical capacity building, the project is also engaging the wider community. Through a series of awareness campaigns, 92 beneficiaries have learned about the connection between waste management and climate change, the importance of reducing carbon emissions, and simple actions that individuals and communities can take to adopt more environmentally responsible practices.
These activities form part of a comprehensive project that also includes an ongoing study to calculate the carbon footprint of Kafr El Sheikh City’s solid waste management system. The findings of the study will provide valuable data to support evidence-based planning and identify practical opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Carbon Footprint Measurement and Reduction Project for Solid Waste in Kafr El Sheikh City is implemented by Earth’s Climate for Sustainable Development Foundation in collaboration with Sustainability Studio Africa & Middle East.
Etijah and GIZ Egypt are implementing these trainings through the EU Green: EU Support for Growth through Egyptian Environment Networks / National Solid Waste Management Programme, implemented on behalf of the European Union and the German Government, in partnership with the Ministry of Local Development and Environment (MoLDE).
